Netflix
In 1997 Netflix began as NetFlix.com, and it was founded by Wilmot Reed Hastings Jr. (Reed Hastings), who was born on October 8, 1960 in Massachusetts and Marc Randolph. Originally customers could subscribe for a monthly fee of $19.95, and would be able to rent as many movies as they wanted, with a limit of three at a time. The customers would normally receive their DVD's within a couple of days from one of the 20 regional shipping centers across the US. This changed society because now people could see as many movies as they wanted and they wouldn't have to buy all of the movies. Also, it would mean that they could watch more and more movies at home unlike before when they would have to go out to movie theaters to see different movie. This could then mean that people don't socialize as much in this way because they are just staying home to watch their movies instead of going out and seeing them with other people and socializing with those other people. Then, came a new service called CineMatch that compared the rental patterns of their customers to other customers and recommended them movies that they might like. This created something new because now people had a way of hearing about movies that they might like and maybe movies that they wouldn't have originally watched but they will give a try now. In 2001 Netflix was distributing about 100,000 DVD,s per week, and in 2003 the subscribers reached 1,000,000. In 2007 Netflix saw what the people wanted and started offering streaming of on demand videos over the web, and didn't charge their subscribers any more for this service. They said, about this, "In order to succeed broadly with streaming, we need it to be easy and inexpensive for consumers to watch Internet video on their television screens. Specifically, our goal is to have our streaming software integrated into Blu-Ray players, game consoles, connected DVDs, and standalone Internet devices." and that is just what they did. Today offering movies and shows on your computers, phones, PlayStation and many more things, and it isn't all the expensive since the member ship is only $7.99 a month. Someone who is in business with Netflix said "We are delighted to be in business with Netflix to deliver season three, as well as past seasons of ‘The Killing’ to a broader audience." This shows that not only is Netflix good for the people because it makes it easier for them to get shows or movies, but it is also good for the people who share their films with Netflix because it lets more people view their films.
